Merida Real Estate

The authentic city of Merida

Away from Mexico’s bright white beaches is an alternative serene place. A colorful town that is attracting a crowd of new residents. Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan region is beaming with residents from all over the world. This magical city in the heart of the Yucatan is fastly becoming home to many. Real estate in Merida is at an all-time high and is showing no sign of slowing.

The grand colonial city of Merida was once home to the greatest concentration of wealth in the world. It was the sisal barons of the 19th century who hired Parisian architects to build the opulent villas along Paseo de Montejo. Yet Merida, the inland capital of Mexico’s beach famous Yucatan, is not an important city and this is where its charm lies. It isn’t packed with visitors and you never feel you are in a tourist trap.

Like the city of Havana in Cuba, the historical center simply known as Centro has had a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) makeover. It isn’t always easy to spot, however. While the cobbled streets are swept and the gardens of the Plaza Grande are well manicured, the tangled wiring of telephones and electricity hangs too low for comfort. All in all, the good and the bad, Merida is a magical place that deserves to be seen.

There are as many dilapidated buildings as there are restored ones. You can see a newly painted white façade next to faded terracotta one with peeling shutters. Peer into a rundown house and you’ll see impressively proportioned rooms with intricately tiled floors just visible through layers of dust, an overgrown tropical courtyard and tons of potential.

The opportunity to buy into this old world glamor has been taken up quietly by expats like American artists, bohemians in search of quiet life and even a sculptor or two. For this reason, Merida is a destination to live in rather than visit. It’s behind these closed doors that the secret life of the city takes place.

If renovating an old relic isn’t for you, Merida has tons of new developments as well as restored homes that take your breath away. Rent one and, if you are lucky, you may become part of this world. The city will take hold of you and you will find yourself searching for a real estate agent in Merida who will whisk you around the city to find the best place for you to call home.

No matter what you are looking for Merida has it all. If you want to find a condo in a small gated community, it’s here. If you are looking for a rundown old hacienda to fix up and add your touches to, it’s here also. There is room for everyone in Merida and its surrounding areas. When you have made the decision to buy real estate in Merida, find a real estate agent and start shopping. Paradise awaits you!
