Getting out of town
While there is no shortage of fun to be had in Merida, there is also no denying that the city a great base from which to arrange awesome day trips. If you are after a fun day that will please the whole family, then consider hopping in your car and driving to the famous archaeological site of Uxmal. There are many stops along the way that makes this day trip even more rewarding.
For this little Maya day trip, here are some great suggestions along the way and on the way back. Merida is a great starting point for many trips around the Yucatan. Because of its central location, you can hit the Mayan ruins or head to the beach. All excursions can take you a day, or a few depending on how you want to spend your time.
When visiting Uxmal, make sure you take plenty of water. It is a big site and it gets very hot at times. Go as early as possible so you beat the crowds. Uxmal is a very popular site, more so than other Mayan ruins so you are not likely to have it to yourself. There are, however, quiet spots to be had here. There is so much to do and so many spots to see, the higher you climb will also make you feel secluded from the crowds as well.
Once you are done, grab a drink and drive over the road to Choco Story. This museum combines the history of chocolate with a stunning botanical garden, rehabilitated monkeys and jaguars and live demonstrations of Maya cultural uses of chocolate (including a tasting). There’s even a small playground on site. You can grab a chocolate based drink or snack here as well.
An easy option after the Choco Story is to add a cenote visit to your day on the way back to Merida. These underground water spots are just the thing to end your perfect day of adventure and discovery. Cenotes are all over the Yucatan and you are sure to find one either just by driving or by asking someone before you leave Uxmal. They are hidden gems that everyone is aware of and something you must experience while you are visiting the Yucatan Peninsula.
Whatever day trip and adventure you decide to get yourself into, there are many to be explored. It’s always a great idea to get out of town and explore other areas whether you are just visiting Merida or you have decided to call this little piece of paradise your home. Merida and its surrounding areas are filled with many adventures whether you stay within the city limits or venture out for a day or two.
